Founder member and secretary of ICI Wilton Works Recreation Club Photographic Section. Founder member of Saltburn Photographic Society, a committee member since the foundation of the Society, serving as secretary, syllabus secretary, chairman and currently publicity secretary. I have visited many clubs throughout the North of England with his colleague the late Derrick Thurman, and his wife Cathleen with slide presentations and photographic judging
I first became involved with photography when I was about eleven years old. My first SLR was a Zenith E which gave me a good grounding in managing speed and aperture. Later on I had my own dark room, printing in both black and white and colour. When I retired I converted to digital, though I still love prints and prefer them to digital images. I have learned a great deal about all aspects of photography since joining Saltburn Photographic Society in 2016 and in December 2019 achieved my licentiatship with the Disabled Photographer's Society.
I began taking photographs in the mid sixties when I was given a Kodak Brownie camera for my birthday. I now use a Canon 760D and recently I bought an Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera which has lots of great features and I have been delighted with its performance. When I retired in 2014 I joined Saltburn U3A to improve my camera skills and my knowledge of photography and in 2017 I joined Saltburn Photographic Society.
I have been a member of the Society since 1997. In 1999 I was asked to take over responsibility for refreshments at meetings and as a result joined the committee. I have been Tea Lady ever since. I was Society Treasurer from 2001 to 2007 and have been Chairman. I enjoyed taking holiday and family photographs on slide film with my Minolta camera but have recently acquired a KM7D so I am trying to develop competence in digital photography. Time will tell if I am successful!
I have been a member of Saltburn Photographic Society for 32 years, where I have held the office of; Competition Secretary, Secretary, Chairman and currently Syllabus Secretary which is a role I have held for the last 8 years. I am a lecturer and competition judge for the Northern Counties Photographic Federation which is an amalgamation of 50 clubs from North Yorkshire to the Scottish Borders. I gained a Licentiate distinction with the Royal Photographic Society in 2013 and an Associate distinction in 2016. My main interest is Landscape Photography.
I first joined a camera club down South at the age of 14, in 1960. After three years at college I had a 20 year career in the technical side of photography. After moving up here I joined this Society in the late 80s when film and chemicals were the norm. Nowadays I embrace digital with enthusiasm but if you need information on analogue photography I'm the man to see!
I believe that this will be my fifth year at Saltburn PS, but I have been taking photographs (off and on) for a lot longer! These days my main interest is in landscapes, and in particular those with water. I don't mind if it is a river, lake, loch or the sea. I am never without my tripod as most of my images are taken with long exposures that could not be hand held. I enjoy entering the society competitions as the constructive feedback can often be very helpful.
I initially joined the society in 1975 as my parents were already members, leaving in 1986 due to work commitments. In 2008 I joined the society again, at first I was using a digital bridge camera and then upgraded to a DSLR. Three years later I became a member of the committee. Street photography is my main focus, but recently I have been exploring action and bird photography.
I have always been interested in photography, as my Father was very keen, and I have vivid memories of watching photographs emerge in his 'dark room' (our bathroom cleverly converted!) I find it hard now to remember a time when I didn't have a camera and always enjoyed taking photos on holidays and around where I lived. I was lucky enough to have a friend at university who was an excellent photographer, and I learned from him how to use an SLR. When I retired I attended several courses, joined a U3A group, and eventually joined SPS, and these have inspired me to keep learning and experimenting with my camera.
